THE CHALLENGE

With Intercare Living, the main challenge is choosing the right model of equipment for the space. A majority of users is supervised out-patients, skewed toward the older population, elderly. There are also rehab users, and fitness level is expected to be more on the beginner side.

With the space of only 82sqm, how do we propose the right combination of equipment to ensure access to full body training, while prioritizing the end users in mind?

WHAT WE FOUND DURING ASSESSMENT

OBSTACLE 1: Limited Space

An 82sqm room that will be open to all Intercare customers, patients, and physical therapy sessions.

OBSTACLE 2: Standard Ceiling

Standard 2.7m from floor to ceiling limits some useful equipment that require more clearance. (Stairclimbers, Assisted Chin/Dips,...)

OBSTACLE 3: Elderly Users

Equipment will have to cater to a much older user group, some with lower than normal strength.

OBSTACLE 4: Full Body Training

The space must allow for full-body training especially for rehab users.

THE DESIGN APPROACH

SOLUTION 1: Multi-Station Jungle Stack Machine

We decided to go with a 4-Station Jungle Stack machine, and having two different exercise functions per station giving a total of 8 separate functions:

  1. Shoulder Press / Chest Press

  2. Lat Pulldown / Low Row

  3. Leg Curl / Leg Extension

  4. Bicep Curl / Tricep Extension

SOLUTION 2: Free Weights & Accessories Section

By adding a full set of dumbbells up to 25kg, an adjustable bench, and a combination of various weights and resistance, we allow users to training all the way from beginner to advanced. Physical Therapists can also use a variety of different tools to help their patients.

SOLUTION 3: The Right Models of Cardio Equipment

We decided to go with one of our more expensive treadmills, the T7XP model. The treadmill starts at a very low 0.5km/h as opposed to 1km/h for our more standard models. This allows older patients and elderly customers to get on and start safely.

We opted in for a recumbent bike (with a nice back support) to cater to a high number of older patients and users as well.
